Predator: Badlands on IMDb

Plot Overview

One Way

performance reportrejectIn a warrior clan on a distant planet, Yautja runt Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi) loses a fang in a sparring contest but was rescued (“You protected me”) by his big brother Kwei (Mike Homik.) Their demanding father Njohrr (also Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi) wants the weakling culled in his sleep, but big bro helps him escape to a do-or-die quest to earn his bones (“You're hunting something that can't be killed”) on the death planet Genna where if he is unable to procure a trophy Kalisk—everyone who's tried before has failed—at least he will die a noble death.

David and Goliath

tyrannosaurusleoposauruspterodactylIt's a dog-eat-dog world where Dek would soon have become lunch were it not for the timely intervention of Thia (Elle Fanning) a damaged, legless Weyland-Yutani synthetic who shows him the ropes. She knows many of the planetary dangers and even where the elusive prey is holed up whom her company wants to collect for a sample. They become unlikely allies with the non-ambulatory Thia tied on the back of a determined Dek as she guides him.

Ideology

wild dogThe following exchange occurs between the two: Dek: “You need to learn to survive on your own.” Thia: “I can survive on my own. But who would want to survive on their own?” That brings up the philosophical observation, (Eccl. 4:7-8) “Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun. There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.” Dek gets persuaded by Thia to emulate the alpha wolf who seeks the good of the pack.

(Eccl. 4:9) “Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.” Working together Dek & Thia find Thia's missing legs (“There I am!”) and leg of bone bison burgers for Dek and a tagalong monkey they name Buddy (Rohinal Nayaran.)

anthropomorphic tarragon(Eccl. 4:10) “For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.” Buddy helps them survive a rapacious tree. When Dek's father is in trouble, though, he doesn't have his eldest son to come to his aid as he'd been executed (by dad)—quel domage.

(Eccl. 4:11) “Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?” Dek & Kwei bunked together; it gave the latter access to the former for a slated mercy killing. Dek carried Thia on his back like a papoose giving them physical contact. Even warriors need some warmth of affection.

(Eccl. 4:12) “And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” When Bud spit on Dek, they were about to come to blows until Thia intervened telling Dek that was the way Bud marked him as belonging to his clan. The three of them together were unstoppable be they a gimp, a runt, and a chimp.

Production Values

” (2025) is another slice of the “Predator” pie. It was directed by Dan Trachtenberg. It was written by Patrick Aison, Dan Trachtenberg and Jim Thomas. It stars Reuben de Jong, Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi. Schuster-Koloamatangi gave strong performance(s) as aliens a bit big for their britches. Fanning was splendid as a synth and a synth sis. The actors had good chemistry together albeit an explosive concoction. The girl did all the talking, and the young man bellowed at the beasts.

MPA rated it PG–13 for sequences of strong sci-fi violence. It was filmed on location in Rotorua, New Zealand. The costume design was out of this world. The digital special effects were outstanding. Runtime is 1¾ hours.

Review Conclusion w/a Christian's Recommendation

You can pay a premium for bouncy seats in the theater or watch it in 3–D for free. Even a regular display will be intense, but I don't think a video screen would do it justice. I remember the first “Jurassic Park” in which the kid in front of me jumped out of his seat as the Dino was about to bite. This is that kind of movie. Be prepared.
