Nine Lives Times Two

Plot Overview

In the year 2054 ad, Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson) and his
friend Timo (Steven Yeun) flee Earth on a spaceship bound for
ice planet Nilfheim. Timo is a pilot, but Mickey lacking any other
skills signs on as an “expendable,” up for risky
assignments but able to be reprinted and reanimated w/memory
transfer every time he dies. He develops a relationship in
transit with negress Nasha Barrage (Naomi Ackie,) but sex is
verboten as it would consume too many dear calories. After
landfall, by and by, Mickey 17 falls into a crevasse
inhabited by monsters and is left for dead (again.)
The monsters turn out to be more rescuers than ravagers, multiple clones are strictly forbidden—there's a death penalty for both,—and a redeposited Mickey 17 (“Why aren't you dead?”) conspires with Mickey 18 to alternate assignments and keep quiet about each other. The colony leader Kenneth Marshall (Mark Ruffalo) in order to bolster his political clout and not realizing the benign nature of the native “creepers,” plans to gas them to extinction, mamas and sucklings included. It is like a paragraph from a Bruno Brehm historical novel:
Now and then Francis Ferdinand stops before a fine buck, nods sharply, points with his stick to the red shot mark on the shoulder and then goes on, noting shot by shot. When he comes to the does, the beaters hang their heads together; but Este is not at all ashamed, he passes on and counts. Oh! He has shot more than this number by far—two thousand hares and pheasants in a day—he can't help doing it once he begins—the far-carrying weapon gives him a sensation of power. Once, when he was lying ill on the Mendel near Bozen as a child—his health was very bad at the time—he had hit a young larch with his toy shotgun. Even then, his aim was better than a court gardener's at Schönbrunn. Perhaps he had not exactly meant to kill those does, but they had run out in front of him and he really couldn't help it—he simply had to let fly; he must know whether his hand and eye were still sure. So now the brown beasts lie before him in long, stretched-out rows to bear witness to his unfailing aim, head by head— (101)
Ideology
Lest we be too horrified
by the pending death of Bambi, let us consider, (Eccl. 5:8) “If thou seest the
oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of judgment and
justice in a province, marvel not at the matter: for he that is
higher than the highest regardeth; and there be higher than
they.” There don't seem to be a whole lot of checks and
balances up there and not a judge in sight, but sometimes
frontier justice works best.
The community meals of synthetic
food take on the air of a religious observance. Think along the
lines of, (1Cor. 10:20)
“But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice,
they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye
should have fellowship with devils. Ye cannot drink the
cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers
of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.”
There is no separation of church and
state in this colony. As Marshall is bloviating he slips into
calling the colony “the church.” Then he leads the
gathering in hymns, rousing but of unclear substance. It puts one
in mind of the apostle's admonition, (2Cor. 6:14-18) “Be ye not
unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath
righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light
with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what
part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement
hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the
living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in
them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith
the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and
daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.”
In the expected mixup, a female crew
member laments the loss of her lesbian lover. Then when Nasha beds
Mickey 18 thinking he's 17, the bisexual asks 17, “Are
you and Nasha open?” When he goes to investigate, the
coupling lovers invite him to join them. This gives a whole new
meaning to “bi,” and I don't even want to go there.
Production Values
“” 2025 was directed by Bong Joon-Ho. It was written by Bong Joon Ho and adapted from the novel, Mickey7 by Edward Ashton. It stars Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Mark Ruffalo, and Toni Collette. The acting is first rate, the whole crew delivers, but it's Pattinson who's the shining star. He gives an excellent narration, and he convincingly differentiates his two characters.
MPA rated it R for violent content, language throughout, sexual content and drug material. Strong use of CGI and fantastic costume designs give the cast a realistic look in this Sci-Fi composition. Runtime is 2 hours 17 minutes.
Review Conclusion w/a Christian's Recommendation
If we turn the page on Paul, we get the appropriate sentiment:
CHAPTER 7H A V I N G therefore these prom-
H ises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse
ourselves from all filthiness of the
flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in
the fear of God.
We concur with the sentiment on Earth, that God made one soul to inhabit one body. The experiments had to be done off planet. The leader had lost two elections, and he got the colony as a booby prize.
There are some movies that can inspire one to adventure. This one'll make you happy to go home.
