The Night Is Young

VFW (2019) on IMDb

Plot Overview

In an apocalyptic near future, “Miss Teen USA” Elizabeth “Lizard” (Sierra McCormick) seeks refuge in VFW Post 2494 from neighborhood druggies pursuing her. In repelling the first wave of attack, the vets kill hulk-like Roadie (Graham Skipper) little brother of Boz (Travis Hammer) the boss of the drug dealers. This makes it a fight to the finish, with not a cop in sight and their escape vehicles compromised. It's an ad hoc, joint military adventure worthy of a great generation.

Ideology

A Christian will by and by have his faith tested (Luke 17.5) praying for something or other. The Lord assures us praying (Luke 17:6) is efficacious. There is a caveat, though, and a cultural disconnect tying to understand it: (Luke 17:7-10) “But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat? And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink? Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not. So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.” God may not snap right to it, answering our prayers, but may expect more service first.

Uncle SamVFW” illustrates the same principle but in a realm we're more familiar with, duty calling a soldier after he has successfully completed his deployment. The vets had been planning to take VFW bar owner Fred Parras (Stephan Lang) to the Déjà Vu at Lincoln for some adult entertainment on his birthday, but duty called them to stay and fight once Lizard stumbled in the door. When the going got tough and Fred their ranking commander decided to go into the abyss with a buzz from a bottle, Lizard shamed him for being such a pussy and got him to lead the men to “make our stand.” He'll get his birthday present after the skirmish is over.

Used car salesman Lou Clayton (Martin Kove) wanted to negotiate their way out of it, but, no, they were called to fight. We can't, say, just give money to the church and ignore our personal callings.

Newbie Ranger Shawn “Dead Eye” Mason (Tom Williamson) had flown back from his tour wearing his uniform figuring on getting bumped up to first class, but it didn't work that way. He also had to ignore his wife at home for the time being while he aided his comrades in arms. That's like what the apostle Paul tells married men in, (1Cor. 7:29) “But this I say, brethren, the time is short: it remaineth, that … they that have wives be as though they had none.”

A reluctant, wizened Abe Hawkins (Fred Williamson) sucked it up and took point.

Production Values

” (2019) was directed by Joe Begos. It was written by Max Brallier & Matthew McArdle. It stars Stephen Lang, William Sadler, and Fred Williamson. Excellent acting by the whole cast lifted the picture out of mediocrity.

It doesn't appear to be rated but FYI there wasn't any nudity or sex in the movie, but it employed plenty of military crude language and featured lots of gore. Original music by Steve Moon played the mood just right. The fighting was expertly choreographed though hard to make out in the dim light—I turned up the brightness on my display to compensate. The props were a mixed bag of genuine articles and phony stuff. It's 1½ hours long.

Review Conclusion w/ Christian Recommendation

This is like a teenage slasher movie where the grandpas get to have all the fun. It is what it is; watch it accordingly.
