Writer's Slump

The Lost City on IMDb

Plot Overview

loversTalking head Dr. Loretta Litman (Sandra Bullock) tried boosting her flagging career by “writing schlock” and succeeded with a “vapid lady fantasy book” featuring a fresh meat, cover model Alan (Channing Tatum) posing shirtless. Her late archeologist husband John had helped by translating a fictional language in her book series, which an eccentric male millionaire Abigail Fairfax (Daniel Radcliffe) thinks can lead him to a lost treasure city, so he kidnaps her. She'd lost track of reality while living in seclusion as “a human mummy,” so she gets caught up in the quest following (fictional) literary clues Fantasy
Island Express to volcanic Isla Hundida in the Atlantic. Alan thinks she's in trouble, so he enlists the aid of his ex-military contact Jack Trainer (Brad Pitt) whom he tags along behind in the jungle and later takes over for, wanting to prove he can be the real hero of her romantic imagination. Loretta's publisher Beth Hatten (Da'Vine Joy Randolph) brings up the rear to protect her cash cow.

Ideology

commercial pilotIt's up for grabs how this romantic adventure will turn out, but that's nothing new. (Prov. 30:18-19) “There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not: The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid.” The writer of Proverbs juxtaposed three hard-to-track movements with romantic intrigues: a soaring eagle, a slithering snake, and a tossed-about ship. TLC employs images from the same three venues to prepare the viewer for the unanticipated love machinations. For “the way of an eagle in the air” is substituted a puddle jumper piloted by laid back pilot Oscar (Oscar Nunez) who leaves the plane unattended on autopilot while he retreats to the cargo bay with the goats to visit Loretta.

“The way of a serpent upon a rock” lobster here are lots of slimy cave snakes surrounding the heroine, and we don't know how she can escape them.

“The way of a ship in the midst of the sea” is a boat in a cove, on which a found-out villain attempts to escape by running, and where's he gonna run to? He's on a boat.

Production Values

” (2022) was directed by Aaron Nee and Adam Nee. It was written by Oren Uziel, Dana Fox, and Adam Nee. It stars Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum and Daniel Radcliffe. Surprisingly, the chemistry between Bullock and Tatum worked well. Impressive acting was done by everyone in turn.

MPAA rated it PG–13 for violence and some bloody images, suggestive material, partial nudity and language. It was filmed on location in Samana, Dominican Republic. The soundtrack enhanced the picture quite nicely. The writers cleverly subverted sexism criteria rather than let it dampen their creativity. The picture quality is pristine, the sets realistic.

Review Conclusion w/a Christian's Recommendation

I found the action/adventure pleasant—for a guy who likes snakes & trees—and the romance tolerable—not too much mushy stuff. The jokes were clean mostly. This movie would work well for date night or for young viewers. They used to have quicksand in this kind of flick; here we've got a sinkhole … somewhere. It's good action/adventure cum romance that doesn't overwhelm.
